Taking care of your feet includes more than trimming your nails

Unmistakenly, nail care is an important component of overall foot health. But it is only the beginning. Equally important is the skin, how you wash your feet, what you wear on your feet and any medical diagnoses you may have. In between visits with your foot care nurse, there are interventions you can make every day that contribute to your foot health. The simplest measure you can take is looking at your feet. A visual inspection may reveal cracked skin or a small stone that you otherwise may not feel. These examples may not sound significant, but when gone unnoticed, can develop into problems that can take years to heal. The best care you can give yourself, is preventative care. Integrate foot inspections into your daily routine. Make a note of any changes you see, and report them to your foot care nurse by phone, or at your next appointment. Let your nurse guide you with the next steps to resolve your concern.

We want you to achieve and maintain healthy feet, which in turn, enables a healthy and fulfilling lifestyle.

Tips for healthy feet

  • Wash and inspect feet daily
  • If unable to view bottom of foot, place a mirror beneath your feet to see them
  • Dry feet after washing, especially between toes
  • Wear clean socks every day. Socks should be non-restrictive
  • Wear proper fitting shoes with arch support
  • Wear footwear inside and outside the home
  • Check the inside of shoes prior to putting them on
  • Report any abnormalities such as pain, callus', scratches, bumps, swelling or blisters to your foot care nurse right away
